Home Rules Pilots Task Area Waypoints Results Getting there Info Czech republic

On Sunday 20, the first day of the competition the task has been cancelled because of the high thunderstorm risk.

The sky was overcasted of thick cumulus, mostly of the pilots took off to test the area. The decision was right, at six in the afternoon the area was hit by a severe storm with a max rate of 200mm of waterfall.

Monday 21: strong north wind, deadly dangerous conditions, no way to fly.

Twesday 22: the north wind is weaker, all the pilots are on the take off, but in the afternoon it strengths gain, task cancelled and everybody comes back with the bus shuttles

Wednesday 23: the severe low pressure area on Bulgaria and Slovakia, is still cause of air rotation that is the cause of the north winds on the Alps, but the north wind is weaker and there is a good chance to make a task. When a provisional theme over the flatland is already settled, the north wind starts again to blow with gusts up to 30 km/h. The north wind condition is the most highly dangerous situation in Cornizzolo, the conditions are not suitable at all for a safe task, as, even with a full flatland task there would be a lot of turbulences especially at the low levels and because of low medium level of  most of the pilots, this would mean an high risk of accidents.

Task cancelled, mostly of the pilots come back with the shuttles, but a tenth of them take off. The conditions over the flatland are severe, with bumpy thermals, the gliders are weaving requiring an highly skilled control ability, meanwhile in the landing strong wind gusts are coming from west. The landing situation is tricky but the pilot’s skill is good enough to ensure the safety.

Thursday 24: good flyable condition, at last. It is settled a task of 63 km, shorter than the day possibility, but safe and long enough to ensure all the pilots to get familiar with the area. As for all of this kind of Open Formula competition, there is a strong skill difference among the  competitors, that are coming from all the nations; so the task has to be difficult enough to satisfy the top level pilots but also with the maximum safety to ensure the lower skill pilots. For this reason the first turnpoint West is at mt. Bollettone, than the second is mt. Tesoro East, then a flatland to Monguzzo castle section and goal in Suello. At the start, the pilots are flying at a good altitude of 1700-1800m and the first glide is quite efficient, but they find a significant front west wind, a lot of them stops to gain altitude in a good thermal but mostly keep on gliding toward the turnpoint confident to be able to gain altitude along the ridges. The situation is quite confused, meanwhile the best of the ranking are gliding at 1700m, there are two gaggles of 30 pilots spread on the slopes, clearly in the lee side. The west wind is not so strong but the thermals conditions are still developing and are still a bit bumpy at the low levels. It is a normal situation for the area, very common for the flight, but, meanwhile for the high altitude pilots there are no problems, the less skilled pilots at the lower levels are flying into lee sides and narrow valleys the one following eachother. Two of them fall into the trees (no injuries, only some surgery inspection), so, the safety committee declare a level 3 and the task is cancelled. The best pilots keep on flying finding even best conditions as the afternoon goes on, with high altitude flights. A lot of them will complete the task easily. The cancellation decision will be defined as to be right by some pilots and too much cautious from some others.

Friday 25: first valid task. The decision is to set an easy task without any possible lee side or possibility to make a lee side choice (a pilot felt anyway on the trees flying in a nonsense lee side route back to mt Barro). The task is set to East till to mt. Tesoro, then back to west over the flatland. But conditions are a bit stable, with maximum altitudes of 1600m (1300 over the flatland). As the afternoon goes on the conditions do not improve, a lot of pilots are forced to land and only a few of them (among them the best Czeck and some of the best locals) are able to reach again at low altitude the mt. Cornizzolo, a forced choice to gain altitude before to go to the last turnpoint. All of them are forced to land earlier at the official landing. At the end, the only one in goal is Tomas Brauner after more than four hours. Great performance, flying mostly alone over the flatland. -I’ve been saved twice by the birds that showed me the thermals- He declared.

Saturday 26: clouds and thunderstorm forecast. The task director waits till 2pm to define the task but there is no thermal activity and even a weak backwind. Task cancelled.
Despite of a weather statistics that gives 6-7 out of 7 flyable days for july, and a Cornizzolo Cup History of 10 years of successfull competition in july, this mad 2008 summer strikes again and there has been only two flyable days. Nevertheless, the organization performed exellently as usual and the days was clear and sunny to enjoy the lakes lanscape.
See you for the next Cornizzolo Cup.
